SYNOPSIS

The Guardians of Team Dalton reconnect following the hospitalization of one of their teammates, something that leaves them with more questions than answers, as the loyalties of the team members are called into question. But following a tense reunion, a brief respite is given as the team takes a trip together for Dalton's daughter's birthday. Danger is never far behind, as Yokouro continues to incite war between the humans and demons, destabilizing the realms further and laying plots to push Dalton toward a destiny he never knew he held. As Dalton's powers grow, he learns that he is the vessel for the ancient dragon spirit Kuryaoin, an entity that is empowered by the goodness exhibited in the actions of humanity across all the realms. This spirit is locked in a fated duel with the dragon spirit hosted by Yokouro, Yasuain, who is strengthened by the cruelty and viciousness of humanity. But to prepare for the fated battle with Yokouro, Dalton must first go through a painful and devastating transformation of his own where everything about his world turns upside down and forces him to incorporate a power he locked away long ago.

Demon Sexuality: After the Guardians' interaction with Al in Chapter 6, Keito reveals that demons are bisexual (not all but mostly). It is safe to assume that 95% of characters in the Amiverse are bisexual unless stated otherwise. For Team Dalton - Dalton: heterosexual, Eclipse: heterosexual, Mitoki: bisexual, Hanyi: asexual, Keito: pansexual.
Homophobia?: After the Guardians' interaction with Al in Chapter 6, Eclipse states that he's not homophobic, "just uncomfortable." He is not homophobic, but he was harassed repeatedly by a superior in the Guardian Branch when he was in his late teens and early twenties. He never reported the harassment out of embarrassment. Now he is merely wary of any man who seems overly flirtatious.
Cabin Juxtaposition: The domesticity and silliness of the antics at the cabin were necessary to put in the beginning of the book to offset how severely the book ends. Otherwise, this book would have been far too dark. While the oscillation in tone between the beginning and the end is immense, it also allows the end of the book to land as needed with what Dalton has lost.
Lythehacrentoah: The realms of the collective have simplified names: "human," "darkness," "light," etc. But each realm has a dragon name. Dalton hears the full dragon name of the Realm of Light during his dream in Chapter 8. The name is simplified to "light" because of the evolutionary stage of magic in the realm when it was connected. This was the case for all the human-inhabited realms. "Darkness" refers to an earlier magical evolution of humans while "humans" was meant as the middle evolution of humanity's magical evolution. The magical evolution of the realms is explained by Vestera in Book 5, Chapter 17.
The DeVastes Family Curse: Yokouro's various crimes are marked all over his body by the black cursed markings. The ones on his body represent 1,000 lives lost, while the ones on his face and neck represent the spilled blood of immediate family (within 2 generations). The reason Rutu is able to make those marks burn so severely as a means to punish Yokouro is because he was the one to place the curse on the bloodline thousands of years previous. The curse is of his own making. Yokouro does not know this.
Antiquan's Last Words: When Yokouro kills Antiquan III, he ominously says “I guess he was right all along…” before dying. While Yokouro does not get an answer, the truth is when Antiquan III was picking his successor, he was looking at demon bloodlines, and with Yokouro being in the womb at the time, he went to Juki and asked him about the strength of the DeVastes Clan. Juki told him he would be picking a very strong successor, but he would be the one that would eventually kill him. The "he" Antiquan was referring to was Juki.
Evil Souls: Kawakara Kage is one of only 3 characters in the Amiverse to be "born bad." He is a truly evil soul, which is very rare in the Amiverse. The only other two characters are Frank Morris and his son Bryant Morris. Those characters can be explored in Roadside Paradise (later books) and The Coalition Trilogy.
Juki's Siblings: Due to the already very large cast of Dimension Guardian, the interactions with Juki's younger siblings were delegated only to his interactions with Acurala and the stories the others tell about his family. But his surviving half-siblings actually show the signs of their age. Of the nine mates Kawakara took, only three of them had potent enough genetics to lead to the "lack of aging" that Juki and Acurala display. So some of his siblings actually appear old, and while that would have been fun to explore when it came to demon genetics and magic, the cast was already far too big to introduce the other Kage Siblings.
"Are you you?": VAGUE BOOK 5 SPOILER! When Dalton asks Keito "Are you you?" in Chapter 24, it is actually Dalton's dragon magic sensing the secret that Keito will reveal in Book 5.
Frieda's Attack: When Frieda explains that she was cornered and almost attacked by a group of men before the texts started coming in, warning her of the impending attack, the men who cornered her were not Yokouro's men actually. They were Kage agents. Acting on Rutu's orders based on something he saw in a possible future, they were not to harm Frieda, but scare her just enough that her routine got thrown off balance so that she would miss a few days of her oral contraception, leading to the conception of Dalton's second child. The reason for this will be in another easter egg section in Book 6.
Deceiving the Kages: Since Juki and Rutu are so powerful, it is very difficult to deceive them. The way Yokouro was able to keep his plan with Acurala and Dalton secret from them until things got out of hand was actually shown briefly through the book. Juki and Rutu complaining about Yokouro "running them ragged" was because he was purposely interrupting their sleep and making them overly exhausted and busy so that when he told them to rest so the following day they could move forward with Rutu's plan for incorporating Dalton's dragon magic, they were able to fall into deep sleep for the first time in weeks. That was the reason it took them a while to realize what was going wrong. When Dalton's magic finally became volatile enough, it was able to wake Juki because of the magic attached to him. That was how they were deceived and why it took them a while to come to Team Dalton's aid.
Rutu's Lead Foot: The banter between Juki and Rutu when they get out of the van with almost no fuel left in the tank is another moment to show Rutu's car collecting tendency and his love of sports cars.
Juki's Bad Shoulder: This will be explored in the Trade Masters Saga (eventually), but Juki's "bad shoulder" is actually a deformation as a result of poor healing that occurred during his 21 year imprisonment by his father when his shoulder was repeatedly dislocated.
